Achilles Tendon Preston

A painful Achilles tendon is a common complaint amongst runners, other sporting backgrounds and the general population.

Pain and dysfunction of the Achilles tendon is known as a tendinopathy, commonly referred to as Achilles tendinitis. Achilles tendinopathies can be categorised into two types, mid-portion and insertional tendinopathies, both of which have different approaches to manage.

Symptoms

It is common to experience pain within the Achilles first thing in a morning but notice symptoms ease the more you move and walk. With activities such as running, individuals may experience symptoms ease during activity by then return or worsen at rest.

Tenderness may also be present when you squeeze the tendon. You may also feel localised swelling or thickening of the tendon when compared to the opposite side.

Further information

It is important to highlight, not all posterior heel pain is an Achilles tendon issue, other potential diagnoses may include retrocalcaneal bursa, superficial calcaneal bursa, sural nerve or the plantaris tendon.

At Preston Sports Clinic we have many years of experience managing Achilles tendon injuries and we understand how frustrating and painful a tendon injury can be.

If you are struggling with Achilles tendon pain it is key to have a full clinical assessment before starting a rehabilitation plan.
